Children s Awareness Of Youth Smoking - 969 Words

Nine out of every ten smokers tried their first cigarette before the age of 18, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, (â€Å"Youth and Tobacco Use†). The eyes of many open once they experience a loved one that suffered from addiction . In the United States, there are many active companies that are trying to increase the awareness of youth smoking. American Lung Association tries to inform parents and children about the risk smoking has to our bodies, (â€Å"Our Mission†). To dramatically improve the health of the youth, many organizations come together to inform the youth of the effects smoking has on them. Drug Abuse Resistance Education, is a program that elementary students take part to learn about good decision-making skills, (â€Å"Mission†). This program teaches children about the dangers of smoking and other illegal substances. For many, this may be the only adult telling them the risks of smoking. The D.A.R.E Vision is, â€Å"Teaching students good decision-making skills to help them lead safe and healthy lives,† (â€Å"Mission†). Fifth grade is when I participated in the D.A.R.E. program, this changed my life more than I ever thought possible. I started getting upset when I saw a family member smoking. I can look back to one particular day, I went home from school crying and my mom was very concerned. I wrote a note to my aunt about how much I wanted her to stop smoking because I could not imagine life without her.
